Roses from My Garden
Continually at the vanguard of progressive image making throughout his career, Knight has also worked on numerous projects that are demonstrative of a constant desire to study and understand nature. Series like Flora and Roses, or photographs like British Birds or Angel all give new form to organic life.
Nick Knight’s home in the outer reaches of south-west London sprawls across two plots of land. Spread out around his garden’s perimeter, still in garden-centre plastic pots, is a line-up of rose bushes. These are the subjects of some of his most beautiful artworks.
‘[Roses] have a poetic, transient existence. In their last throes of passion, they are dying in front of my camera. They give everything. And that’s it; their petals fall and they are no more. There’s a poetic tragedy there and a melancholy to them which I enjoy. They have, of course, a difficult side to them. Sublime beauty but with a powerful life force.’ – Nick Knight
